In Memoriam: Dean Burroughs

The Lower Eastern Shore Beekeepers Association honors the enduring legacy of Dean Burroughs. While many knew him as a Hall of Fame tennis coach and professor at Salisbury University, to our community, Dean was the ultimate advocate for the honey bee.

For over 25 years, Dean served as a Maryland State Apiary Inspector, traveling across six counties on the Eastern Shore. He didn't just inspect hives for disease; he used every visit as an opportunity to build an educational rapport with local beekeepers. Whether you had two hives in your backyard or were running a large operation, Dean was there to offer guidance, patience, and expert advice.

A true purist in his craft, Dean managed around 300 of his own hives in Salisbury, often providing local honey to community staples like Rise Up Coffee Roasters. His leadership extended far beyond the local bee yard:

  • Past President of the Maryland State Beekeepers Association

  • Appointee to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Honey Nominations Committee

  • Master Beekeeper and mentor to countless Eastern Shore residents

Dean believed in letting the bees teach us. His dedication to apiary health, public education, and community stewardship remains the gold standard for our association.
